Life Events

Missouri Farm Bureau has many different types of insurance to help one handle a life changing event. Search through the categories below and click on the category name to see what Missouri Farm Bureau can do for you.

Getting Married

Finding that special someone to share your life with is one of life’s richest rewards. With so many details to tend to, wedding planning can often neglect topics relating to insurance and financial services—some of the most important areas that an engaged couple need to address.

As far as your insurance program is concerned, here are some areas that need to be reviewed:
  • Plan to insure all your automobiles at one company. Most carriers offer multiple auto discounts.
  • Secure coverage for the home or apartment where you plan to live after you are married. If your autos are with the same company, you may qualify for having a total account discount.
  • Review your health insurance coverage. Marriage allows you to change health insurance plans through an employer without waiting until your annual enrollment period.
  • Life insurance and disability income should be purchased to cover any debt, final expenses or lost income. Committing to another person includes protecting them from financial loss due to death or disability.
  • Review beneficiary designation on any existing life insurance policies.

New Baby

The proudest moment in a parent’s life is when their child is born. Yet, for parents, a new baby also means new responsibilities and concerns. This is an important time for a complete review of your insurance plan.

Here are some of the items that should be addressed prior to the birth of a new baby:
  • Make sure your auto and home insurance coverage are adequate. Catastrophic events can put your new family into financial hardship if you are not properly covered.
  • Review your health insurance plan. Does the hospital have your insurance information? Are you carrying your cards in a safe place that is readily on hand? What is covered? What isn’t?
  • Create a solid life insurance and disability income plan. Your new baby will depend on you and your income for the necessities of life. These products guarantee that your child will never be a victim of financial hardship due to death or disablement.
  • Work with an attorney to create or fine tune a last will and testament.
After your baby is born . . .
  • Start a life insurance program for your child. Rates are at their lowest and your child is most likely to be insurable. Some life products provide coverage throughout a newborn’s life with one premium payment. Others give your child the ability to purchase insurance later in life with no medical exams. What a great gift for a grandparent to give a grandchild!
  • Begin saving for college. Tuition is constantly increasing in price and financial goals are easier attained if started early. Talk to your agent about the various products we have that can be funded to fill this need.

New Job

Whether it’s your first job or a new position as you move up the corporate ladder, career changes bring with them issues that need to be addressed. A total account review with your Farm Bureau Agent can be an optimal solution!

When changing employers, here are some questions concerning your insurance plan that should be answered:
  • Does your new employer provide benefits? If so, when will they take effect?
  • Are any short-term policies needed in the interim?
  • Is group coverage best for my spouse and dependents, or should I consider separate coverage for them?
  • If different forms of optional coverage are available, what are the premiums?
  • What happens should I leave employment?
  • What do I need to do with any previous benefits that have carried over, such as a 401(k)?

Retirement

A healthy, financially secure retirement is the goal of nearly every working person. To achieve this reality, careful planning and commitment must take place. Your Farm Bureau Agent can help you plan for and meet these goals.

Here are some topics to discuss with your agent before retirement:
  • Review your existing life insurance and disability income plan. Will any of these benefits expire? If so, when?
  • Plan your health insurance strategy. Is there a gap between retirement and the age requirement to qualify for Medicare? Will any temporary plans be needed in the interim? Will Medicare be enough or is a supplemental policy needed? If applicable, is a long term care policy needed?
  • If you have not done so recently, review your auto and homeowners policies. Are you over or under-insured in any areas? Do you still own everything you are insuring? Have any new items been added? Is an umbrella policy needed? Can existing premium dollars be used to fund other needs?
  • Inventory your current retirement savings. Can accounts be consolidated? How close are you to your goal? Life insurance and annuities are tools that can help you achieve and exceed your retirement savings goals.

A New Driver in the House!

Nothing strikes fear in the hearts of parents like the news that their children have passed their driver’s test! There is no better time than now to review your policies with your Farm Bureau Agent.

Here is a checklist of items to review when adding a new driver to your household:
  • Identification information such as social security number and driver’s license.
  • Report card or transcript if your child qualifies for a good student discount.
  • Beneficiary information. At Farm Bureau Insurance, our auto policy automatically gives your child a $50,000 term life insurance policy at no additional cost.
  • If a loan is being taken out on the vehicle, consider life insurance or disability income to pay off the loan in the event to death or disability. With an exceptional claims and driving record, this may qualify you for Elite coverage or our multi-line discount.*
  • Be ready to review all home and auto policies to make sure you are properly covered.

A New Car!

Purchasing a new car can be a truly exciting experience. To make sure you are properly covered when you drive it off the lot, it is important to contact your Farm Bureau Insurance agent!

Here is a checklist of items to review and have on hand when purchasing a new vehicle:
  • Vehicle Identification Number and how it will be titled.
  • Information regarding use of the vehicle. Where and how often will it be driven? Will it be used for business? Farming? Recreation? Who will primarily drive it?
  • Where will the new vehicle be located (garaged)?
  • Plan to review existing vehicle coverage and make necessary updates. If collision and other than collision coverage are desired, have deductible choices ready.
  • Any applicable loan information (i.e. company, address, and loan number).

Moving Into a New Home!

It’s exciting to move into a new home. A move like this means changes to your home insurance coverage. Farm Bureau can work with you to design the best policy to protect your new purchase. Lots of different types of coverage are involved in property insurance. For the best result, contact your local Farm Bureau Agent to help guide you through the levels of protection available.

Here is a checklist of insurance items to review when moving into a new home:
  • Make an inventory of special items that may need to be packed separately (jewelry, antiques, valuables, etc.). Check with your Farm Bureau Insurance Agent to see if these items are properly covered in the event of a move.
  • Keep critical documents such as insurance information close at hand. Make sure your auto policy is up to date with Emergency Roadside Service coverage or the Farm Bureau Motor Club (Elite policy holders only).
  • Secure property and valuables along the way. Nothing can be worse than valuable personal property being stolen during a move. Check with your Farm Bureau Insurance Agent to verify coverages. Often coverage needs to be purchased through the mover/shipper.
  • Don’t forget to update your existing home and auto policies with your new address. You may be able to qualify for a better rate!
Make your move a smooth one. Call a Farm Bureau Agent today!

Graduation Day

Whether it’s high school or college, graduation day is one that’s full of opportunities and challenges. Your Farm Bureau Insurance agent can help you answer your questions and concerns relating to this big transition.

Here are some insurance items to discuss with your Farm Bureau Insurance Agent prior to this event . . .
  • Is your child taking a car to school? If so, will changes need to be made to your existing auto policy? Who will be paying premiums?
  • How will your child’s clothes, computer and other necessities be covered while in the dorm or apartment? Who is liable if any damage occurs? Will a renter’s policy be appropriate?
  • What needs to be done in relation to health insurance protection for your child? Does graduation affect your current plan? Will a COBRA or separate policy be appropriate?
  • How much savings for college currently exists? Will your child be able to complete his/her education if something was to happen to you? Is life insurance or disability income needed?
  • If your child has obtained that first job, what benefits are provided and when do they take effect? Are any short-term policies needed in the interim?
Help make this a transition into the “real world” a smooth one. Contact your Farm Bureau Insurance Agent today for a complete review of your insurance plan!
