Business Insurance Coverage Descriptions

Our agents, your risk management specialists, will guide you through the types of risks your business may be exposed to and offer coverage solutions specific to your business. These descriptions can be used as a general guide to unique business coverage options.

BONDS - The surety bond demonstrates the company will abide by the obligee’s rules and regulations. A business service bond protects customers from any loss incurred from dishonest acts by employees and business owners. Most importantly, clients/customers will be glad to know that employees are bonded in case theft arises.

BUILDING AND STRUCTURES ON PREMISE - Coverage for Building and completed additions and fixtures, such as outdoor fixtures and permanently installed machinery and equipment.

BUSINESS INCOME - Provides protection against loss of income and extra expenses when you cannot operate your business because of a covered loss. This coverage will help replace net income that would have been earned if the loss had not occurred. It helps cover ordinary payroll expenses for employees for the time required to either repair or replace the business premises, up to the policy limits.

BUSINESS LIABILITY PROTECTION - Protects if someone is injured on your property due to your negligence. Your liability policy may pay for their injuries and any legal costs.

BUSINESS OWNERS POLICY (BOP) - A business owner’s policy (BOP) is a special type of commercial insurance designed for small and medium-sized businesses. BOP combines protection for all major property and liability risks in one package and is typically sold at a premium that is less than the total cost of the stand alone coverages.

BUSINESS OWNERS DISABILITY POLICY - This business expense DI policy reimburses the business owner monthly for eligible fixed business expenses should the owner become sick or hurt and totally disabled.

Eligible business expenses that may be covered include lease or rent payments, utilities, office maintenance and repairs, billing and collection fees, depreciation, mortgage and loan interest, property and payroll taxes, property and liability insurance, and employee salaries.

BUSINESS PERSONAL PROPERTY - Coverage for property that the business owns and that is used in the business, such things as furniture, shelving, stock and other contents. It can also protect property from losses away from the business, such as at a client's office.

COMMERCIAL AUTO - If company vehicles will be used, those vehicles should be fully insured to protect businesses against liability if an accident should occur. At the very least, businesses should insure against third-party injury, but comprehensive insurance will cover that vehicle in an accident, as well.

CYBER LIABILITY - There is a risk posed by conducting business over the Internet, over other networks or using electronic storage technology. Insurance can be bought and "risk based" security strategies can be used to mitigate against both the first- and third-party risks caused by cyber liability.

DIRECTORS AND OFFICERS LIABILITY - The combination of specialized products targeting for-profit, non-profit, and community associations risks. Provides coverage for situations where a poor decision was made by a company’s board of directors or officers resulting in a claim for damage.

EQUIPMENT BREAKDOWN - Provides coverage for loss due to mechanical or electrical breakdown of nearly any type of equipment. Coverage applies to the cost to repair or replace the equipment and any other property damaged by the equipment breakdown. Resulting business income and extra expense loss is often covered as well.

EMPLOYEE DISHONESTY - Employee dishonesty is any fraudulent act committed by an employee or a group of employees and could potentially result in financial losses for a company. To protect its interest, a company may purchase a commercial crime policy or a standalone employee dishonesty insurance.

EMPLOYMENT PRACTICES LIABILITY INSURANCE (EPLI) - Liability insurance covering wrongful acts arising from the employment process. The most frequent types of claims covered under such policies include: wrongful termination, discrimination, sexual harassment, and retaliation. EPLI policies are written on a claims-made basis.

FIRE LEGAL LIABILITY - Provides coverage for fire damage to premises you rent or occupy with the landlord’s permission. You must have been negligent in causing the fire for this coverage to respond.

FLOOD AND EARTHQUAKE - Typically excluded from business owners policy.

GROUP HEALTH - Offering health insurance tells prospective and current employees that the company cares for its workers. Providing employer sponsored health coverage could allow for additional tax deductions and credits should the business qualify for them.

LIQUOR LIABILITY - Protects against claims for injury sustained by reason of selling, serving or furnishing any alcoholic beverage during the course of the business operations.

PRODUCT AND COMPLETED OPERATIONS - Provides protection for bodily injury and property damage that occurs away from premises that are caused by the products or work performed by the business.

PROFESSIONAL LIABILITY - Professional liability insurance, also known as errors and omissions (E&O) insurance, covers a business against negligence claims due to harm that results from mistakes or failure to perform. There is no one-size-fits-all policy for professional liability insurance. Each industry has its own set of concerns that will be addressed in a customized policy written for a business.

UMBRELLA - Also called excess liability, a commercial umbrella insurance policy can give additional coverage to several smaller policies in place for your business. Generally, those policies may be your general liability policy, your employer's liability, and hired and non-owned motor vehicle policies.

WORKERS COMPENSATION - Once the first employee has been hired, workers' compensation insurance should be added to a business’s insurance policy. This will cover medical treatment, disability and death benefits in the event an employee is injured or dies as a result of his work with that business. Even if employees are performing seemingly low-risk work, slip-and-fall injuries or medical conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome could result in a pricey claim.
